Web Applications Developer
This position is no longer open. May 20, 2004
We are looking for an unusual person for the opportunity
of a lifetime. Maybe it’s you!
Our products are designed to be world-class quality. They are partially
financed by the National Heart Lung & Blood Institute (NHLBI)
and will be partially regulated by US FDA’s Center
for Biologics Evaluation & Research (CBER) as Medical Devices.
Products utilize browser based audio-video touch screen computer
assisted self interviewing (AVT-CASI) and related technologies which
are being scientifically shown to greatly improve user and staff
satisfaction, dramatically cut errors and increase honesty while
reducing costs. Initially these benefits are being studied to see
how they impact blood supply safety and availability. Ultimately
they are expected to apply to many other medical and non-medical
areas.
Technical Requirements: Develop and maintain
web-based applications for the company’s current and future
products. We need experience with the following technologies and
tools:
- ASP
- MS Access, SQL Server and relational databases in general
- Web technologies: HTML, CSS, JavaScript/VBScript, C#
- Microsoft development environment: Visual Studio, Source Safe,
etc.
- Strong Windows knowledge (2000, XP)
- .NET
- Rapid prototyping
- Willingness to learn new things
- Notions of performance tuning, testing, usability, etc.
- Nice to have: streaming media, networking
Education and experience: Masters or
beyond, preferably in Computer Science, and preferably with refereed
scientific publications, CBER knowledge and Quality Systems experience.
5+ years experience as a software developer for a product-oriented
company. That is, a company whose product is the software you developed.
We do not want an IT person, a contractor or body-shopper.
Attitudes and personality: We are an
extremely small company. While the work environment
is informal, it is extremely demanding. Here are some characteristics
that we look for:
- Quality. You strive to achieve error rates
of one per million or less and know the statistical foundations
for achieving them or are at least enthusiastic about learning
them.
- Professionalism. You take pride in your work,
and the work has inherent value to you. You spend your own time
and money keeping up with your profession. When something new
comes along, you learn it by reading a couple of books, research
the web and then work on it nights and weekends.
- Passion: You do this because you love it,
not just because it’s a job. You’d do much the same
thing even if you didn’t need to work for a living.
- Dedication: You do what needs to be done.
This can mean pulling an all-nighter (or all weeker) to complete
a project or meet a deadline, including those for proposals. It can mean doing something that’s
“not your job” if that’s what needs to be done
today. For instance, drop off a package at FedEx, go to the store
to pick up office supplies, fix a computer, help a client on the
phone or take out the trash. And you don’t use your performance of these “extra”
tasks as an excuse not go get your committed work done.
- Responsibility: You do what you say you will
do. You are available nights and weekends for emergencies or critical
work. You don’t work to the clock or take a day off just
because you have a cold or there is a little snow on the ground.
Alternatively, in situations like occasional family emergencies,
such as are created by children not attending school due to snow,
we can normally make arrangements for you to work from home.
- Integrity: You are honest and direct (but
tactful) in dealings with colleagues, customers, vendors and the
community. Much of our work relates to the scientific community,
where high integrity is imperative.
- Writing Skill: You are an excellent writer
and editor. Maybe you learned it by earning a research-based advanced
degree. Or perhaps you learned it some other way. We look for
excellent writing skills for communication within and outside
the company, for documentation, both internal and external, for
reporting purposes to NHLBI, CBER, customers and others, and –
ideally – for publication.
- Technology weenie: Not only do our products
embody technology, but we use technology daily to make the company
go. This includes email, laptops, wireless networks, broadband,
mobile phones, tablets, bar codes, etc. You need to really like
this stuff!
- Stability: We are looking for someone who as
been around the block and who is not looking simply to put more
notches in their resume. The person we want will join us because
they resonate with all the above, want to join us in building
an award winning company and they look forward to working here
for a long time.
- US Food and Drug Administration regulatory experience: Our primary market
is blood banks, which are highly regulated by CBER . Our products
and documentation, as well as our methodology, are subject to NHLBI
and FDA medical device scrutiny. Prior experience with FDA regulations will
be extremely helpful.
If the above describes you, then we should talk. If not, do us
both a favor and don’t bother to send us anything, because
you won’t be considered.
Benefits include fully-paid employee health plan, three weeks paid
time off, 10 holidays, cell phones, high speed home Internet and
casual dress most of the time. Future benefits will be enriched
with company success and your contributions to it.
Please submit your application by completing the form below.
This
is the only way we will consider your application, so don’t
even bother to email, fax or phone.
